we cannot wait until the next generation. >> less than a minute. >> you have the president and john boehner in the room. what is the advice you give these two men as they begin these conversations? >> sit down, have a beer, quit joshing each other, quit listening to the babble from the right and the left, saying we're throwing the old lady off the cliff in the wheelchair -- [laughter] watering the earth in his white robes, telling people they raised taxes. that was a freudian thing there. [laughter] what can grover do to you? he cannot murder you or burn your house. the only thing he can do to you is defeat you for reelection or put some jerk in the primary, and if that means more to you than the country, you should not even be in the damn congress. [applause] >> your advice? >> compromise, do the right thing. now is the magic moment. it is our responsibility. >> i want to thank you both. we are out of time. the conversation is going to continue here at the summit. thank you again for joining us. thank you to the two of you. i appreciate your work as well. we will be right back in just a mo

creeding to john boehner's authority, let be john boehner negotiate this deal. all speculation he will not get involved in the same level. certainly he will be briefed and make his opinions known but he's not going to try to tell john boehner you cannot get this through the conference. look at it from a broad perspective, from folks i've spoken to, eric cantor is thinking like this -- general belief and consensus is if the gop wants to get in 2014 that boehner will most likely walk away in 2016. if cantor can be a dutiful lieutenant until then he could until 2016 if the house republicans win with redistricting and the margins they have which looks possible, he could achieve his dream of becoming the first jewish speaker of the house. no reason to try to ascertain and go higher up like he did in 2011 which left a negative impression of him in a lot of folks' opinions. it's going to be interesting to see if he, in fact, does stay back and credes to boehner's authorities. from all the conversation that's what he seems to be doing. >> i love the mixed messages here.

you had john mccain four years ago, john kerry eight years ago. so it is different because during the weeks after he was put on the romney ticket, there was a lot offed a you'll lation for paul ryan here. it is different now. and he comes back and we expect he'll get his same position as the head of the house budget committee. that requires a special waiver because he's had that job for the maximum amount of time. he's still well-regarded by his republican colleagues and i think you get a sense that he's been through a challenging election period. we'll have to see how much of a public posture he wants to have going forward, and so ryan is back, but we don't yet have a measure of how influential he will be. >> what sway then, kelly, do you think he has in the fiscal cliff negotiations? >> everything we're getting a sense of is that this will be a negotiation that at least on front stage will be between speaker boehner and president obama. and so boehner is certainly influenced by ryan's knowledge of the budget, but i don't think that this is going

john kerry is still, you know, a contender for this. he would also make a very good secretary of state. i want to go back to the whole question of what capitol hill's engagement in this should be. i think in some ways we're looking -- we're asking some of the wrong questions. to my mind, in addition to the questions about what happened in this particular episode, we should revisit the state department's request for $300 million more in security for its embassies and consulates last, which was roundly rejected by republicans in congress. i believe that any republican who is on record rejecting that $300 million request to beef up security should answer questions from the press that have not been asked, i should note, as to why they objected to approving what the state department understandably felt was the need to improve its securities at those embassies. which needless to say, might have helped in this situation. >> of course, we look forward to hearing paul ryan's response to those questions. >> not just ryan, all of them. >> indeed.
